Rec Tournament Teams

TBL conducted tryouts for rec tournament teams for the 8U-12U age divisions. These teams are not "travel baseball teams", but all-star teams comprised of kids that play in TBL's spring/summer recreational league.

Tryouts were held on Saturday, January 11 & 18 at The Edge indoor facility in Twinsburg and approximately 80 kids attended the tryouts. There were a total of six teams formed (two 8U teams), and for the first time in recent history, we have an 11U and 12U rec tournament team! This also is the most players on rec tournament teams to date.  Congrats to all of the players and good luck during tournaments!

Tryouts for the TBL rec league tournament teams are typically held Saturdays (two consecutive) in January at the Edge Sports Academy located at 9550 Ravenna Rd in Twinsburg.  Kids from other communities besides Twinsburg are welcome to try out, but they must be registered for and play in TBL's 2020 spring rec league.

Kids only need to attend one of the two sessions, but are welcome to and we encourage them to attend both. If they attend both tryouts, their two scores are averaged. There will be an additional registration fee (in addition to regular rec league reg fee), which will help cover a portion of the costs related to winter practices, uniforms, and tournament entry fees. TBL subsidizes the rest of the costs as a line item in our annual budget.

We anticipate the tournament teams will practice once a week (starting at an indoor facility in mid-January, and outdoors once the weather permits).  Teams typically play in three tournaments - one each in May (usually Memorial Day weekend), one in June, and one in July. Rec tournament team practices and tournaments are scheduled so they will not interfere with a player’s rec league team schedule.

TBL regularly has sufficient interest to field teams at the 8U, 9U and 10U age divisions.  An 11U (and potentially 12U) team will also be formed, if sufficient interest is demonstrated at tryouts. TBL has in prior years carried two teams in an age group, as a means to allow broader player development, when player interest and talent levels permit.  We will again consider more than one team at an age level, at a coach’s discretion, if the number of eligible players and overall talent level of the teams would benefit from a more expanded roster.

A player’s age as of May 1, 2020 establishes their "official age" for the coming season for tournament play/tryouts.

  • 8U - 2020 Spring TBL Coach Pitch Eligible & NOT Turning 9 prior to May 1, 2020
  • 9U - At Least 9 years old by April 30, 2020 & NOT Turning 10 prior to May 1, 2020
  • 10U - At Least 10 years old by April 30, 2020 & NOT Turning 11 prior to May 1, 2020

Other notes:

  • There must be at least at least 12 players to try out between the two tryouts for an age group for consideration to having one (1) team
  • The Top 10 scores based on tryouts make the team with coach having ability to select between 0-5 additional to round out roster
    • The only exception is 8U where the top 8 age-eligible players will be selected.
  • If  there are 25 or more kids who show up for a tryouts between the two dates for a particular age group, the board may consider two teams pending the following:
    • The distribution of scores at conclusion of tryouts, by board decision, have merit to construct 2 competitive tournament teams
    • There are appropriate and sufficient volunteers - Coaches and assistant coaches to fully support 2 competitive teams
  • If two teams are taken at a given age group they will be balanced (we will not have an "A" and "B" tournament team)
  • Having 25 or more participants does not guarantee the construct of a second team
  • At the 11u and 12u divisions, the number of players selected to the team based on top tryout scores varies based on the number of players who tryout.

A tournament player must honor their rec team first before the tournament team. If the player is caught abusing this rule, he may be removed from the tournament team.

The same rules that apply in the Twinsburg Baseball League, do not not apply in a tournament that the teams may be participating in. Tournament teams are a "position" play team. Every tournament has their own set of rules that the team have to play by.
